The Connecticut Oral Health Initiative (COHI) along with the Department of Public Health, Office of Oral Health and the Connecticut Coalition on Oral Health sponsored the event at the Legislative Office Building of the State Capitol. The theme of this year’s event, “A Healthy Body Starts with a Healthy Mouth” was aimed at promoting oral health for all.
The day consisted of an informative oral health presentation addressing oral health disparities by Linda Ferraro, director of the Department of Public Health Office of Oral Health as well as several table clinics on oral health and related health issues. The table clinics were staffed by various medical and dental groups from all over the state, including the Quinnipiac PA program.
The focus of these tables included: oral health and diabetes; oral health and heart disease; oral health and medication; oral health and tobacco use, oral health during pregnancy, oral health in childhood; health for older adults, oral health access; oral health for persons with special needs and oral health instruction.
In an effort to bring awareness of the impact of oral health on total health, the Quinnipiac students hosted a table clinic on oral health and diabetes and one on oral disease. Participants were provided with blood glucose screenings and education on the relationship of diabetes and oral health as well as various oral diseases including periodontal disease, gingivitis, oral cancers and burning mouth syndrome. Each participant received a new toothbrush, toothpaste and floss. The PA students worked with more than 100 legislators, staff members, state agencies and members of the general public, educating them on the need to make oral health a priority and developing oral health champions
