Advertising professor to be available to discuss World Health Organization’s campaign to ban tobacco ads May 31

roy-abhikThe World Health Organization is calling for all countries to ban all forms of tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship on May 31. Tobacco use kills nearly 6 million people every year, according to the WHO.

Abhik Roy, a professor of advertising and chair of the marketing and advertising department in the School of Business at Quinnipiac University, will be available for telephone interviews on Friday, May 31, to discuss the World Health Organization’s No Tobacco Day campaign.

“I believe that in countries like Russia, India and China, much more can be done to control promotional activities aimed at the younger demographic,” Roy said. “In more developed economies of the West, the targeting of women is more of an issue, although advertising and promotions aimed at creating a new generation of smokers persists throughout the world. The WHO should be commended for continuing to fight this health problem.”

To schedule an interview with Roy, please call John Morgan, associate vice president for public relations at Quinnipiac, at 203-206-4449 (cell).
