Chief diversity officer: Certain Halloween costumes inappropriately perpetuate racial and ethnic stereotypes

Ariza,Diane“Dancing With the Stars” star Julianne Hough ignited controversy by showing up in blackface at a Halloween costume party.

Diane Ariza, associate vice president for academic affairs & chief diversity officer at Quinnipiac University, is available to comment.

“Keep your costumes correct. As many of us observe and participate in Halloween festivities, keep in mind that certain costumes inappropriately perpetuate racial and ethnic stereotypes. Although this may not be your intent, these costumes can depict various cultures in offensive ways and can be hurtful to others,” Ariza said.
