The Food and Drug Administration recently proposed measures to ban trans fats from the food supply. Dana White, clinical assistant professor of athletic training and sports medicine in the School of Health Sciences at Quinnipiac University, who specializes in nutrition and was recently recognized among the Top 10 HealthMakers in nutrition by Sharecare, is available to comment.
“I am very much in favor of this action by the FDA,” said White. “The majority of foods that contain trans fats have little to offer in the nutrition department – they are high in calories and low in nutrients. Because of current food labeling laws, many folks take in more trans fats than they might think. If a food contains 0.5 grams or less per serving, the label can read zero grams, so the only way to know is to look for ‘hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oil’ on the ingredient list.
“But even if we do see trans fats banished, consumers still need to be mindful of the other dietary risks to cardiovascular health like saturated fat and cholesterol. If and when food manufacturers reformulate their products to remove trans fats, they often replace the hydrogenated oils with things like coconut and palm oil that are high in saturated fat.”
