Kevin Basmadjian, dean of the School of Education at Quinnipiac University, is available to comment on Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s Educators’ Common Core Implementation Task Force, which has its first meeting scheduled for March 25.
“The Governor’s Task Force on the Common Core is a terrific idea, especially if it had been formed two years ago,” Basmadjian said. “This week, elementary students across our state will begin taking a new assessment intended to measure what they have learned vis-a-vis the Common Core State Standards. So while I deeply appreciate the governor’s desire to hear from those directly involved in the implementation of the CCSS and its assessments, I question why he has taken so long to form this task force. The questions the committee will apparently ask are ones that should have been asked many, many months ago. That said, I am hopeful the governor will listen to their recommendations and will make any changes necessary in order to best serve the students in our state’s public schools.”
